 Yoga Tips

Yoga is a tradition with roots in ancient India that has evolved over time to embrace the wisdom of many places and times. It means many things to many people, and at The Yoga Loft it is fundamentally a discipline to promote personal transformation. Over time yoga has split into dozens of systems, but all share roots in the philosophy laid down in ancient texts such as the Yoga Sutras of Patañjali, a text authored in South Asia sometime between 200 B.C. and 500 B.C.E. As one of many texts on the yoga tradition, the Yoga Sutras offer many insights on the human experience, as well as a program of study for the individual seeking unification, or "yoga." Mastery of yoga comes when the seeker achieves self-realization, or "resides in his own true nature."

The physical practices of yoga, known as Hatha Yoga, have shown tremendous benefits for people seeking fitness as well as therapy for chronic ailments and injuries. Yoga also promotes the creation of a quiet, reflective space in the mind, mental clarity and an overall a sense of well-being that can help alleviate anxiety, depression and mind-body disorders. As you begin to practice yoga exercises, you will notice small effects in the body at first, but ultimately the benefits can be large. By promoting physical and mental change, yoga can help you transform your life.

Arrive a few minutes early to class. If you are new to The Yoga Loft you will need a few extra minutes to complete the registration form and payment. If you are late and the class has started please enter quietly. Please do not enter or leave class during meditation or savasana (final rest). If you must leave during the class please close the door quietly.

Practice on an empty stomach. We recommend that you wait at least three hours after eating before practicing yoga. If necessary have juice or very light food before class. Refrain from sipping water during class so that you can maintain internal heat. Drink plenty of water after class.

Alert the teacher to any injuries prior to class starting. This will help us know how to adjust you or give you a modified pose if necessary. This is for your safety and the longevity of your yoga practice.

Do not bring a friend who is new to yoga to a Level 2 or 2&3 class.

Purchase a yoga mat. We do have yoga mats available to rent for $1, but having your own yoga mat is more hygienic.

Please do not bring cell phones into class. Let the teacher know if you are in an emergency or on-call situation and we will make arrangements to accommodate you.

Remove your shoes when entering the yoga room. Help keep the floor clean!

Always sign in to your class. Check in with the front desk for every class you attend.

Be aware of personal hygiene. Refrain from wearing any fragrance to class and remember that mats need washing from time to time.

Attention to detail is often the gateway into a deeper experience. Yoga, more than being a series of physical poses, is also a state of mind and heart. It includes respect for the space and the people around you with a generous spirit. Thank you for observing our guidelines!
